At the recently held Manila Times Philippine Model Cities and Municipalities 2024 Forum, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco emphasized the pivotal role of local governments in advancing the country’s tourism industry. Serving as the keynote speaker, Frasco highlighted how local government units (LGUs) contribute to nation-building, as the event recognized outstanding LGUs from across the country.
"I am honored to support The Manila Times, whose unwavering dedication to recognizing the transformative efforts of local governments exemplifies the positive role that media and the private sector can play in nation-building," Frasco remarked.
She further emphasized that honoring LGUs has a far-reaching impact, encouraging inclusive growth, sustainability, and innovative governance — all crucial to the progress of cities and municipalities, ultimately benefiting communities across the nation.
Recalling her time as mayor of Liloan, Cebu, Frasco shared the pride of receiving The Manila Times' Top Model Municipality Award in 2019. “These recognitions validated our work in community building and inclusive governance, motivating us to push through challenges and expand programs aimed at innovation and sustainability,” she shared.
Since becoming Tourism Secretary, Frasco has reinforced the importance of engaging grassroots communities, including LGUs, to ensure equal tourism opportunities. The Department of Tourism (DOT) has rolled out several flagship initiatives that directly support LGUs, including the Tourism Champions Challenge, which has allocated PHP 255 million in national government funding for tourism infrastructure. She also cited Isabela City, Basilan, as an inspiring example — once a conflict area, now a peaceful, flourishing tourist destination.
In collaboration with LGUs, the DOT continues to construct Tourist Rest Areas and is set to launch the Tourist First Aid Facility, which will benefit LGUs overseeing highly populated tourist destinations. Additionally, the DOT is prioritizing the construction of tourism roads to improve accessibility.
Secretary Frasco concluded by commending The Manila Times for their continued commitment to recognizing exemplary LGUs, stating, “Today’s forum is more than a celebration of success; it is a powerful reminder that good governance, collaboration, and innovation are the foundations for a brighter future for all Filipinos. I urge local leaders to continue their outstanding work, as it will transform the development landscape in the Philippines and create a climate of equitable economic opportunities for all.”
