The Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco welcomed the Philippine delegation selected for the 48th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) on October 14. The contingent, called "Batch Hiraya," will represent the Philippines in cross-cultural exchanges with ASEAN nations and Japan from November 4 to December 11, 2024.
Secretary Frasco emphasized the unique opportunity for the youth to promote the Philippines in areas like tourism, trade, and foreign policy. She praised the delegates for their rigorous selection process, calling them the "cream of the crop" and key to the country’s future.
Frasco highlighted DOT’s efforts to promote sustainable and equitable tourism for both current and future generations. She mentioned the department’s initiatives, including destination preservation, digitalization, and youth-focused programs. These efforts align with the Philippines' growing role in the international tourism and trade sectors.
The SSEAYP has, since 1974, fostered goodwill and mutual understanding between Japan and Southeast Asian nations. This year, one national leader and 15 youth leaders from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will take part in the program, sharing stories of hope and forging deeper ties with other nations.
The event also featured NYC Chairperson and CEO Undersecretary Joseph Francisco Ortega, DOT officials, and other National Youth Commission members. Secretary Frasco underscored the significance of the program in nurturing future leaders, reiterating the Philippines' readiness to showcase its culture, heritage, and commitment to youth development on the international stage.
