Intramuros, Manila, is in the running for the esteemed title of "World’s Leading Tourist Attraction" at the upcoming 2024 World Travel Awards (WTA). This historic Walled City has captured attention for its cultural importance and recent accolades. The Intramuros Administration is encouraging the public to participate by voting on the WTA's official website.
To cast a vote, participants must register for an account, confirm their email, and navigate to the relevant category to select "Intramuros, Philippines." Voting ends on October 20, creating a brief window for supporters to lend their voices.

Intramuros faces strong competition from iconic sites, including India’s Taj Mahal, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, Peru’s Machu Picchu, and China’s Great Wall. This competitive landscape highlights the global significance of the award, making each vote critical for the Walled City’s chances.
The nomination carries weight due to Intramuros' past achievements; it has been named Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction multiple times, winning in 2016, 2020, 2022, and 2023. Notably, it last secured the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction title in 2020, establishing a high benchmark for contenders.
The Philippines has recently gained recognition in the tourism sector, having hosted the Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony in Parañaque. At this event, the country garnered eight awards, including Asia's Leading Beach Destination, Asia's Leading Dive Destination, and Asia's Leading Island Destination for 2024. These accolades showcase the nation's diverse offerings and commitment to promoting its rich cultural heritage.

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards is one of the most prestigious programs in the travel and hospitality industry. It honors excellence across various sectors, spotlighting destinations that contribute significantly to global tourism.
As anticipation builds for the WTA 2024 Grand Final Gala Ceremony in Madeira, Portugal, on November 24, the competition remains intense. Intramuros’ nomination not only highlights its historical and cultural significance but also reflects the Philippines’ growing status as a premier tourist destination. Every vote matters, and both local and international supporters are urged to help make Intramuros a global favorite once again.
