Mindanao Weaves Take the World

In Mindanao, textiles are more than fabric—they are living stories. Each thread carries centuries of culture, ritual, and identity. Once reserved for sacred ceremonies, these weaves are now stepping confidently into modern wardrobes, capturing both local pride and global attention.

Back in 2017, more than 25 Miss Universe delegates graced the Mindanao Tapestry fashion show at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City, all wearing creations by designer Renee Salud. It was the same year Experience Travel and Living featured Mindanao’s local textiles, celebrating the artistry and spirit woven into every thread. Since then, the story of these fabrics has continued to unfold—carried forward by a new generation of designers who see tradition not as a relic, but as a living source of inspiration.

In the quiet villages of South Cotabato, the T’nalak remains sacred to the T’boli people. Patterned from dream-inspired visions, it has found modern expression through designers like Mark Suralta Pabon, who transforms the abaca weave into asymmetrical dresses and tailored blazers. His works, featured in Vogue Philippines and recognized at the Habi Kadayawan 2019 awards, blend heritage with forward-thinking design.

The Yakan of Zamboanga bring geometric brilliance to the modern runway. Once woven as communal wraps, their patterns now appear on kaftans and jackets showcased at Manila FAME through collaborations with designers such as Toping Zamora. Meanwhile, the Maguindanaon Inaul, known for its rich hues, continues to inspire collections that honor Bangsamoro identity while embracing sustainability.

In June 2024, Mindanao textiles took another international leap through the KatHABI exhibit organized by the Philippine Textile Research Institute at the Philippine Center in New York City. Running from June 25 to 28, the event celebrated craftsmanship and pushed Filipino weaving further into global consciousness.

As Experience Travel and Living celebrates its 11th anniversary, this story looks back on one of the magazine’s most meaningful journeys—how a feature on Mindanao weaves became a continuing testament to creativity, resilience, and pride. These threads, once rooted in ritual, now weave new stories across the world—reminding us that heritage endures when it is passed on with heart.
