The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has announced a new partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) aimed at improving search and rescue (SAR) operations in the region. The two countries formalized their collaboration on Wednesday by establishing a SAR working group designed to facilitate the exchange of best practices and enhance joint response capabilities.

CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio explained that the Philippines has long been an active participant in regional SAR initiatives, including the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER). Through this partnership with Malaysia, both countries aim to refine their strategies and improve coordination for aeronautical SAR operations, ensuring a more efficient and effective response to emergencies.

"This collaboration will strengthen the region’s ability to respond to SAR challenges and will further build stronger ties between the Philippines and Malaysia," Apolonio said. The CAAP added that the agreement underscores the shared commitment of both nations to improving aviation safety, security, and emergency response operations within their respective airspaces and beyond.

In addition to Malaysia, the CAAP has previously entered into similar partnerships with Japan, the United States, and Australia, focusing on capacity building, technical assistance, and the sharing of expertise in aviation safety and emergency management.

As part of its commitment to international standards, the CAAP ensures that its aeronautical SAR operations align with the guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Apolonio emphasized that the Philippines' approach to SAR operations prioritizes inter-agency coordination, as well as the involvement of local communities, to ensure a comprehensive and effective response to emergencies.

With this new agreement, both countries are poised to significantly enhance their search and rescue capabilities, improving regional cooperation and fostering safer skies for all.
