In recent times, the Philippines has witnessed a troubling surge in road rage incidents. One of the most prominent was the shooting of four individuals, resulting in the death of a motorcycle rider in Antipolo City. These events have highlighted the growing issue of aggression on our roads. In response, the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and our very own President, has reminded motorists to keep calm and respect fellow road users.

As the Holy Week approaches, many of us will travel to the provinces for our Lenten vacations. As expected, there will be a ton of traffic. This period of heightened travel underscores the importance of patience and self-control on the road.
As Christians, especially during the solemn season of Lent, we are called to introspection, repentance, and transformation. Lent is a time to reflect on our actions and align them with the teachings of Christ. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:22-23 of the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These virtues stand in stark contrast to the impulsive anger that fuels road rage.
Practicing the Pause
One practical application of self-control is the concept of "practicing the pause." When faced with provocation on the road, taking a moment to breathe and assess the situation can prevent escalation. This pause allows us to choose a response rooted in patience and understanding, rather than reacting in anger. By doing so, we not only protect ourselves and others but also bear witness to Christ's teachings in our daily lives.
Considering Future Repercussions
Acts of road rage can have severe legal and personal consequences. The proposed Anti-Road Rage Act of 2023 seeks to impose penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment for aggressive driving behaviors. For instance, House Bill 8991 proposes up to 12 years of imprisonment and fines up to ₱500,000 for incidents resulting in death. Beyond legal repercussions, such actions can lead to loss of life, trauma, imprisonment, and a tarnished reputation. As stewards of God's creation, we are accountable for our actions and their impact on others.
Creating a Kinder World
We can choose to view every interaction on the road as an opportunity to embody Christ's love. By extending grace to fellow motorists, practicing patience, and choosing forgiveness over retaliation, we contribute to a more compassionate and empathetic society. This Lent, let us commit to being ambassadors of peace, transforming our roads into avenues of kindness, charity, and understanding.
Conclusion
The rise in road rage incidents in the Philippines serves as a stark reminder of the need for self-control and compassion in our daily lives. As we journey through Lent, may we embrace the discipline of practicing the pause, reflect on the consequences of our actions, and strive to create a kinder world rooted in Christian love and patience.
Have a Blessed Holy Week, everyone.
