Romblon Is The Secret You'll Want to Keep to Yourself

As a foodie, I’d liken Romblon to a hole-in-the-wall discovery—the kind you don’t visit because everyone’s been, but because someone whose taste you trust whispers, “Go.” And when you do, it unfolds like a well-kept secret finally shared.

In this scenic province, which is part of the MIMAROPA Region (Region IV-B), life takes on a gentle rhythm. One beautiful tradition here is Sandukan—neighbors trading home-cooked dishes, turning modest meals into a shared feast. It’s a silent testimony to Romblon’s generosity: multiplying joy without multiplying cost.

Romblon isn’t just about beaches. It’s also home to a thriving marble industry—one that quietly rivals Italy’s Carrara. Skilled artisans carve stunning sculptures and everyday pieces out of local stone, and visitors can witness their artistry in workshops that line the town’s narrow streets. From mortar-and-pestle sets to grand religious icons, this exquisite craftsmanship is part of what gives the island its soul.

Boutique Comfort Meets Island Simplicity

In late 2023, Horizon Hotel Romblon opened its doors in Upper D, Barangay Lonos. It doesn’t try to outshine the cozy bed-and-breakfasts around—it simply offers a slice of boutique luxury, thoughtfully priced for locals. Its first guests? Curious barrio folk. Moreover, LGUs are also recognizing Horizon Hotel as an ideal venue for seminars and special events, thanks to its smart, all-inclusive packages.

Craving modern comfort without sacrificing the island vibe? Horizon hits the sweet spot. There’s an infinity pool with a million-dollar view of the surrounding islets, 21 well-appointed rooms, a gym, sauna, a function room, and a restaurant that transforms the day’s catch into flavorful plates. Even the port-to-hotel transfer (₱200 for four people) feels like a blessing—especially after seeing a Manila cab go viral for charging ₱1,260 just to switch airport terminals.

The warm smiles and heartfelt service of the hotel staff make one feel like a VIP. Even more impressively, they live out the spirit of bayanihan through beach cleanups and even as volunteer fire responders.

A short stroll from the hotel brings you to Bonbon Beach—ranked 38th on the World’s 50 Best Beaches. Powdery white sand, a dreamy sandbar, and calm waters… and often, no one else around.

And if you’re still up for more after lounging by the beach, try island hopping to nearby Alad, Cobrador, or Logbon; snorkel in crystal-clear waters; or explore Fuerza San Andres, a Spanish-era fortress built in 1644 on a hill. This defensive structure, constructed from coral stones, was strategically positioned to protect against pirate attacks during the Spanish colonial period.

Romblon surprises you. Wins you over with sincerity. And leaves you wondering why it’s still such a well-kept secret—like any great hole-in-the-wall find.

Perhaps the secret’s been hiding in plain sight… right at the Horizon.
