For most working professionals, Monday is usually the most dreaded day of
the week. But there’s no such thing as Monday Blues at Seller’s Hub Inc.,
a fast-growing e-commerce retail company with headquarters at General
Trias City, Cavite.
The 6-year-old company religiously holds an exciting DNA Monday every
week—an hour-long town-hall-style meeting wherein assigned team
members take the floor to share business insights and learnings with
everyone in the group. Seller’s Hub’s finest hour of the week facilitates
exchange of thoughts, unveils updates about the company, and of course,
gives way to an insightful management talk from its leader, CEO BK Rivera.
“Our mission is to become one of the best companies in the e-commerce
industry through carrying products that we confidently believe can transform
lives of the consumers,” the 28-year-old business leader shares. “We believe
that Seller’s Hub Inc. can help transform the [e-retail] landscape, thus, we
train our partners, our team members to be aligned with the company’s
goals.”
When it comes to encouraging, inspiring, and developing team members, BK
Rivera is ahead of the game in ways that surely create meaningful
transformations. As a transformational leader, he constantly reminds
everyone to let nothing serve as a holdback when attaining the life he or she
wants.
Molding future CEOs
BK Rivera has been transforming Seller’s Hub from a mere online retailer
into a progressive company offering a great opportunity for team players to
become their own CEOs. “I want the company to grow by design. I want my
people to be competent and capable of running Seller’s Hub each as its CEO
someday. That is why one of the company’s priorities is to train the team to
be business leaders themselves,” he emphasizes.
Company endeavors to further nurture the growth of the team—like DNA
Mondays—have been instituted to help keep the focus of each team
member. Doing it like a practical business school is proving to be an effective way to push every team member to realize and achieve his/her
own potential.
Through the years, Rivera has set his own criteria when screening and
assessing the leadership potential of team players as part of the company’s
succession plans. He is always on the lookout for the three C’s—character,
competency, and chemistry.
“To assess one’s character, he/she must share the core values of the
company.” He further explained that a future CEO must be an IDOL—have
INTEGRITY, be DRIVEN, foster the sense of OWNERSHIP, and live to be a
LIFELONG LEARNER.
Seller’s Hub values integrity of an individual especially when dealing with
customers, who the company considers its lifeline. A driven team member is
one who is obsessed in achieving goals. The sense of ownership, on the
other hand, makes one assume accountability when it comes to keeping the
company’s business and performance. Lastly, a future CEO must also
possess the inherent and insatiable desire to grow by being a lifelong
learner, especially amid the continuously and quickly evolving world.
“Competency is showcased by the turnovers, or how a team member
delivers intended results. At the same time, the future CEO must also exhibit
chemistry or a good working relationship with the company. Working with
me can bring about pressure as I may tend to be a little demanding and
strict at times,” he admits.
Company succession plan
As a dynamic e-commerce company, Seller’s Hub offers a practical and
realizable career progression for qualified future CEOs. Rivera sets three
levels—being a performer, a supervisor, and a manager—for a start, paving
the way for one to become a junior manager.
“To steadily climb up that ladder, a qualified team player must be a ‘walking
IDOL’ through living our core values and at the same time believing in our
products and purpose. He or she must have strong leadership skills with a
good track record in terms of delivering results. Lastly, we value loyalty in
Seller’s Hub,” Rivera explains. “A successful junior executive would then be
promoted into a senior executive, then a VP, and ultimately a future CEO. It
is a journey,” he adds.
One of the most important traits of a future CEO of Seller’s Hub is the ability
to remain customer-centric. “I always tell my team that it is a must to
transform the lives of our customers,” Rivera emphasizes. This way, the
company is paying utmost importance to actual feedback from them. “A CEO
must know how to listen and formulate ways to improve products or
processes based on customers’ reactions.”
Focus on customers
The customer-centric approach to business sets the purpose of the
company: to transform lives through life-changing products. Since Day 1,
Seller’s Hub has always put the wellbeing of its customers on top of its
priorities through choosing the best and most strategic products that will
surely help transform consumers’ lives.
It sells products that can transform physical attributes (slimming coffee,
skincare, and whitening products), relationships (adult pleasure items),
home living (curtains, furniture covers, and the likes), and individual fashion
(garments).
Seller’s Hub also keeps its eyes open and its ears always ready to listen to
what its customers demand. “Our customers are our walking billboards.
When they get the best experience from purchasing and using our products,
they would logically and inevitably spread the word about us,” Rivera says.
Roadmap to the future
In 2023, Seller’s Hub Inc is also set to conquer greater heights with its
strategic plan for fulfillment. One of the major problems in the e-commerce
industry is the rising rate of “canceled orders” that results in returning the
parcels to the sellers. Following this is a sudden spike in shipping fees,
damaged products & lower profits that is being shouldered by the seller.
One of the major reasons for this is the lack of logistics infrastructure in the
Philippines. Being an archipelago, we need to transport our parcels via sea in
order to reach the next island. Seller’s Hub Inc aims to establish fulfillment
centers on the major islands in our country. This results in shorter
transporting days, which leads to faster delivery to customers.
The effect of this is the maximization of company profitability because of the
minimization of losses due to RTS.
If this project succeeds, Seller’s Hub Inc is willing to share its own logistics
infrastructure to the e-commerce industry in order to boost the profitability
of all ecom players.
Transformational leader’s journey
Indeed, Rivera is the type who practices what he preaches. He has proven
himself to be a champion of life transformation himself. His is an interesting
journey, which easily inspires the future business leaders he is presently
molding.
Rivera has started transforming his life at a young age—he was just 10 when
he took the initiative to sell ‘ice drops’ (buko ice cream on sticks) in his
community just so he can spend his own money to play games at computer
shops (he grew up in a fairly well-off family—his dad was a Philippine Navy
officer while his mom, a licensed engineer, was a fulltime housewife).
In his early college years, he learned how to make homemade tocino without
preservatives (making it healthier) from a school elective and sold it to
friends and neighbors. After completing his degree, he got into network
marketing and some short employment stints.
Together with his long-term business and life partner, Ayhen Sabayton,
Rivera set up a sales team as an added means to liquidate products from
their previous network-marketing business. In 2017, after just two months,
Rivera was surprised that the group performed beyond expectations. Thus,
Seller’s Hub was established with his first team mates—Cham Castillo, Mark
Tan, Johnrey Fernandez, and Khengie Bernales.
From a small group, Seller’s Hub has so far grown into a company with
around 60 team members, about 10 of which are in the managerial level, on
their way to the CEO path. It is also open to sign up partner resellers,
especially those who share the goal to help transform customers’ lives.
“We are inviting more like-minded entrepreneurs and prospective business
leaders out there to be part of our ‘tribe.’ Together, let’s make things
happen,” Rivera concludes.
